The Black/University Blue-White colourway first appeared in 2006 during Jordan Brand's Lifestyle era, when releases were paired with matching apparel. University Blue ties the shoe to the University of North Carolina, where Michael Jordan played college basketball, which is where the 'Black Carolina' and 'UNC' nicknames come from.

The Air Jordan 5 Black University Blue pairs a black upper with translucent mesh side panels and a reflective 3M tongue. University Blue appears on the lining, the shark-tooth midsole detail and the embroidered Jumpman on the heel, and the shoe sits on an icy translucent outsole.
